Food Security Center (FSC) was founded in 2010 as part of the DAAD Exceed Program (Hochschulexzellenz in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit meaning high-school excellence in development cooperation) as a Competence centre for “food security’’.  FSC promotes scientific contributions to research, teaching and policy advice, to work on analysis and reduction of hunger and poverty. The funding under this program is up to 5 million Euro for a period of 5 years. A new successfully applied phase was issued in 2014 i.e. Phase II: 2015-2019.

University of Nairobi (UoN) became a strategic partner and started participating in 2014.

Some of the activities under FSC include:

• Excellence scholarships (PhD): Themes by supervisors of Hohenheim or partner universities (incl. material resources)
• Grants for FSC visiting professors (6 months)
• Support of Post-Doctoral students
• Support of Master theses
• Research co-operation (national, international) by application for research funds
• Establishment of contacts and joint research projects with partner institutions
• Organization of public events referring to the overall issue of “Food Security“, e.g. World Food Day Colloquium, Congress on Hidden Hunger among others
